A&S Summer and Overload Course Policy

The purpose of this policy is to help the college cover the costs of instruction while supporting an outstanding and comprehensive curriculum. The enrollment targets represent our best estimate of the minimum number of students needed for an individual summer or overload class to cover the cost of the instructor’s compensation and the indirect costs levied by the university. Best practice would be to exceed minima by a substantial margin.

Enrollment & Compensation

All Courses Taught by Current OHIO Faculty

  • Enrollment of 20 students or more (enrollment target): full pay based on the Provost minimum rate
  • Enrollment of 10-19 students: prorated pay based on proration schedule (See below; proration varies across faculty rank and type.)
  • Enrollment under 10 students: cancel the course

Courses Taught by Graduate Assistants, OHIO Retirees, and Others Paid at the Rate for Non-University Personnel

  • Enrollment of 10 or more students (enrollment target): full pay
  • Enrollment under 10 students: cancel the course

College Guidelines

  • Course enrollment is the sum of the individual enrollments of all sections of a course (undergraduate and graduate sections of dual listed courses, multiple sections of cross-listed courses, and sections for Athens, eCampus, and regional campuses) taught by the instructor.
  • The instructor’s payment is determined the Friday of the first week of classes:
    • For courses that meet or exceed the enrollment target, the instructor receives the full compensation rate listed in the Provost’s guidelines.
    • For courses that do not meet the enrollment target but have at least 10 students, the instructor’s compensation is based on the prorated faculty compensation schedule.
  • A course will be canceled if its enrollment is below 10 students on the Friday before the first meeting of the class.  Instructors receive no compensation for canceled courses.

Although the fiscal year changes mid-summer, compensation rates for each complete summer follow the Provost’s rate sheet for the Academic Year preceding the summer in question (See: Minimum Part-time and Overload Teaching Rates). For courses that must be offered for programmatic reasons or to allow specific students to graduate, department chairs may request an exception to the cancellation policy. Questions should be directed to Sarah Poggione and April Howard
