My research area is mostly in the field of conservation (preservation) genetics and evolutionary genetics. Bats are threatened by an emerging disease, the White Nose Syndrome, which is caused by the fungus, Pseudogymnoascus destructans. My goal is to assess the impact of WNS to bats through the lens of molecular markers. My objectives are: 1) to estimate neutral genetic diversity using mtdna and microsatellites, 2) quantify functionally important variation using MHC genes, 3) detect potential bottlenecks and estimate population size trends using neutral markers, and 4) detect potential signatures of natural selection using protein-coding and neutral markers.
