ACADEMIC ADVISING

Advisors are available in Student Services, which is located in newly renovated area of Bennett Hall. We are your central resource for academic advising on campus. Advisors can help you with:

  • Placement test results
  • Selecting courses or changing your schedule
  • Exploring and declaring, or changing a major
  • Degree planning and goal setting
  • Getting a DARS report, a “what-if” DARS, and how to read it
  • Questions regarding academic majors/programs and minors, courses, professors, etc.
  • Academic issues or concerns

Additionally, we can assist you with:

  • Study tips and college success strategies
  • Campus resources
  • Provide informational websites
  • Offer advice and encouragement

We do more than just help you pick classes. We help you make informed, reasoned decisions that affect your college success. We are here to help! For more information, go to the Ohio University Chillicothe Academic Advising by clicking (here), or contact John Fisher at 740.774.7750 or fisherj3@ohio.edu.

Special events to watch for:

  • “How to Choose a Major” workshops - Get help with determining your best career match. Take the Self Directed Search, a nationally recognized assessment and get immediate feedback from our advisors. Workshops are hosted in the fall and spring semesters. Determining your career path and establishing a goal is a big contributor to academic success. Watch for email and campus announcements.

  • Ohio University Chillicothe Majors Fair - This is our biggest event of the year. You have the chance to visit with representatives from Ohio University Chillicothe and Main campus majors at one time, in one location. Learn about majors we have to offer, minors, courses, and special programs that are available to you. Visit with representatives from Career Services, Study Abroad and more. Access what-if DARS on site for immediate feedback from major representatives. Watch for email and campus announcements.

  • Advising Roadshow - Our advisors go on the road! We take time to visit with students where they meet, in the Stevenson Center. Advisors are available throughout the semester in a more casual setting to discuss academic related issues, but also just to chat. Each week, we have a theme or topic to get the conversation started. We look forward to getting to know you better, so that we can be that cheerleader and provide the support you need for academic success. Watch for email and campus announcements.

We do more than just help you pick classes. We help you make informed, reasoned decisions that affect your college success. We are here to help!

Academic advisors are generally assigned based on the major that you want to pursue. However, the advisors in the Hilltopper Advising Center are here to assist any student with the various majors and other questions they may have. Download the list of program advisors at Ohio University Chillicothe , by selecting the "Advisor List (.PDF)" link on the left side menu, to receive the document in .PDF format.

Advising For Prospective Students

Hopefully you have met an advisor during the application or placement testing process. If not, you will meet with an academic advisor for the first time during new student orientation. The advisor will help you select classes for the first time, based on placement test results, intended major, and course availability. (All new students will register for classes during new student orientation.) For subsequent semesters, you will see your assigned academic advisor. If you do not know who your advisor will be, you are welcome to see an advisor in the Hilltopper Advising Center. You are strongly encouraged to see an academic advisor each and every semester while attending Ohio University Chillicothe.

  • If you have not applied for admission or attended an Open House Friday, that is your first step! Get Ohio University Chillicothe info, a tour of campus, and your application fee waived click, (here).

  • New students will take the AccuPlacer test prior to enrolling. Students should take this test seriously and prepare.  See AccuPlacer sample questions (here).

Advising For Transfer Students

Transfer students are encouraged to meet with an academic advisor at least one semester before transferring to Ohio University Chillicothe or when planning to take classes at another college to complete our degree. When meeting with an academic advisor, it is beneficial if you bring unofficial transcripts from all previous colleges for this meeting. The advisor can then look at what might transfer into your new major and provide feedback. This is not an official transfer evaluation, as an official evaluation is completed once all official transcripts are received from all previous colleges/universities.

New transfer students will register for classes during new student orientation. (All transcripts must be received).  You will meet with an advisor who will help you register for courses according to your intended major, transfer work, and University undergraduate requirements.

  • For a List of Academic Advisors with contact information, select the "Advisor List (.PDF)" link on the left side menu, to receive the document in .PDF format.

  • New student orientation information will be sent to you once your admission information is in order.

  • See the endorsed on-line transfer guide (here).  Note: Equivalencies may not be available for every course on your student record. Follow up with an advisor is recommended.

  • See Ohio University transfer reference documents (here).

  • How to view your transfer credit report, click (here) to download the document in .PDF format.

  • See a list of Ohio University General Education Requirements (here).  Our general education requirements, called the Tier system, may differ from the institution(s) you are transferring from.

If you are transferring out of Ohio University, you will want to verify acceptance of your OU credits at the receiving institution. Based on accreditation, credits from Ohio University will transfer to other institutions, but how those credits apply to the new institutions degree program/requirements will be up to the receiving institution. Please visit with the school you intend to transfer to, to be sure the courses you take at OU will count toward the degree at the new college.

Please note, Ohio University Chillicothe academic advisors are not experts in the requirements of other colleges and universities. If you intend to complete requirements for another college by taking Ohio University classes, then please verify ahead of time which courses you need and bring that information with you when you meet with an advisor.

Request an Ohio University transcript (here).

See the endorsed on-line transfer guide (here). Note: Equivalencies may not be available for every course on your student record. Follow up with an advisor is recommended.

Advising For Current Students

You will be required to meet with an academic advisor in order to register for classes. Students attending Ohio University have a registration hold placed on their account for Fall and Spring semesters. This is called an “advance registration hold” and is designed to ensure you get the help you need selecting your classes.

For subsequent semesters, you will see your assigned academic advisor. If you do not know who your advisor will be, you are welcome to see an advisor in the Hilltopper Advising Center. You are strongly encouraged to see an academic advisor several times a semester while attending Ohio University Chillicothe.

Advising For Students Finishing Degrees on the

Ohio University Main Campus (Relocating Students)

Students that enroll with the intention to complete a degree on the Athens campus are considered RELOCATING students, not transfer students. Relocating students will meet with an advisor on the Chillicothe campus to discuss coursework that is available on the Chillicothe campus as well as a timeline for relocating. Relocating students must be in good academic standing in order to relocate and are subject to other Main Campus requirements such as housing, etc.

  • Students should attend Relocate Day the semester before they wish to be in Athens. This event is hosted in the Fall and Spring, and is a special orientation just for regional campus relocating students.

  • Students attending Relocate Day receive special early registration access. This is the best reason to attend!

  • Find Relocate Day information (here).
