The English minor offers students an overview of the history, conventions, and practices of literature and rhetoric in English, while allowing them to experience a diversity of texts through electives of their choice. The emphasis on critical thinking and analytical writing makes the English minor valuable for students who are pursuing majors in a variety of disciplines, including the fine arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Students pursuing the English minor also have the opportunity to develop their skills as writers of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction prose.

Admission Requirements

Freshman/First-Year Students: Enrollment in the English minor entails no requirements beyond University admission requirements.

Current OU Zanesville Students: Adding the English minor requires a minimum 2.0 gpa, for assistance in adding the minor please contact Dr. Lisa Haven or Mike Nern

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Completion of the English minor enables students to explore career opportunities in which critical analysis of infor- mation and highly-developed writing skills are required

Program Requirements

Completion of the English minor requires a total of 21 semester hours of coursework Complete the following two courses:
ENG 2010—Critical Analysis of Fiction and Non-Fiction Prose: 3hrs
ENG 2020—Critical Analysis of Poetry and Drama: 3hrs

Complete five courses from the following:

ENG 3250—Women & Literature: 3hrs
ENG 3610—Creative Writing Fiction: 3hrs
ENG 3620—Creative Writing Poetry: 3hrs
ENG 3630—Creative Writing Non-Fiction: 3hrs
ENG 3230—American Literature 1918-Present: 3hrs
ENG 3010—Shakespeare: 3hrs (taught every other year)
ENG 3550—Studies in World Literature: 3hrs (taught as needed) ENG 3510—History of the English Language: 3hrs
